Capabilities

This page is my attempt to give my visitors an idea of what the YS fiber network (as I understand it) is capable of providing. Most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) offer 3 basic services over their networks: (1) Internet Data, (2) Voice and (3) Television (aka Cable). At least for the pilot program the YS fiber will offer only Internet Data.

But with just internet data there’s a lot you can do, especially with the bandwidths being provided. The pilot is offering two rates: 300 mega bits (mb) and 1 gigabit (gb, =1,000 megabits). Unless you have some really special uses for the internet, the 300mb rate should suffice, especially since that is 300mb in both directions, compared to Spectrum’s 200 mb into your home but only 10 mb into the internet.

It is entirely practical to use that internet data to also provide voice and television services. The voice technique is called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and the television technique is generically called Streaming. They are discussed in more detail in the Voice and Streaming pages.

The box that will get installed in your home is called an ONT (Optical Network Terminal). Currently YS is offering two versions, both of which feature 4 gb hardwire ethernet ports. The DZS 2428B1 includes WIFI capabilities while the DZS 2424A1 has just the hardwire ethernet ports.
